Make Making Money

App Store Classics: Game Dev Story, a game about making games.

Ever wondered what it’d be like to run your own game development house? Me neither, but don’t let that stop you getting involved with Game Dev Story (iTunes link), a little gem of a game from Japanese developers Kairosoft, currently on sale in the app store for $0.99.

The concept is straightforward – grow your development house from a tiny team of four staff churning out cheap and cheerful PC games to a revered coding powerhouse in swanky offices crafting masterpieces for the latest consoles.

At first you’ll probably be going over budget left right and centre, trying to figure out which game types work best and therefore shift more units, but once you get into the swing of it you can concentrate on hiring and training the best staff and purchasing licences to develop console games, resulting in better made and better selling games with higher profit margins.

It’s not just a question of hiring and firing, coming up with game ideas and watching your staff working their buns off though. Through the use of ‘boosts’ which are periodically made available to purchase as the game progresses (not in-app purchases I hasten to add), you can choose one of your coders to work on enhancing one specific aspect of the game. This pushes up the overall quality of the game you’re making and results in better reviews and sales, adding a further strategic element as you choose the right moment and category in which to use your boosts. At certain points within the development cycle you also get the chance to work on the graphics and sound specifically, either using one of your own staff or hiring in a freelancer, and this too gives you the opportunity to increase the overall quality of your virtual product.

When you make your first million seller it’s a satisfying moment but there’s no time to rest on your laurels. There are always new consoles appearing on the market, contract jobs to take on, new staff to hire and new game types to discover. If you leave too much of a gap between development cycles you start losing fans and therefore a few sales, but think carefully about what kind of games you make – my pirate simulation was a right turkey.

It’s all great fun, but it’s fair to say there are a few things here which need to be addressed by the time Game Dev Story 2 arrives in the app store. I know it’s a tall order on a phone but I couldn’t help thinking how nice it would be if I could play the games my team had made. Even a comedy cut sequence showing some aspects of the latest game would have been good. There are also some hugely expensive advertising options within this game that offer no feedback other than some numbers increasing on a stat page. If I’m sponsoring a racing team I’d like to see my company logo on the side of a formula one car at least!

Finally, the game is perhaps a bit on the easy side. I’m sure if developing a multi million selling game was this straightforward we’d all be at it. Well, maybe not, but it’s easy to make enough money that you don’t have to worry too much about how you spend it, and this negatively impacts the strategy element.

All things considered however, Game Dev Story is great fun. It’s a good natured game and from the cute graphics and retro sound to the amusing titles you can give your creations, it’s a rewarding experience which works perfectly whether in short bursts or longer play sessions. Did I mention that it’s currently only $0.99 on the app store?

And a few months later he began Hugo Cabret, which seems to have been a very trying, technical shoot because of the 3D aspect. And while other films seemed like possible follow-ups (The Irishman, for one) the most obvious way to read the news about The Wolf of Wall Street is that it makes a good choice now because it will allow him to indulge that rediscovered fondness for working quickly.

And The Wolf of Wall Street script is by Boardwalk Empire producer Terence Winter, so this would continue their partnership. Vulture says the film has left Warner Bros., where it was set up last year with Ridley Scott as a possible director. (Martin Scorsese had been attached before that, prior to Shutter Island, so this isn’t the first time the project has changed hands.) Leonardo DiCaprio’s manager has reportedly secured financing for the film outside the studio, and it looks as if the film could shoot this summer — “as early as June” — which would be an incredible turnaround.

I find this news tremendously exciting. I’ve enjoyed the Scorsese/DiCaprio partnership and think it reached a new level with Shutter Island. More important, I absolutely love the idea of the director working fast once again, especially if he’s that energized by doing so.

Here’s the book synopsis:

Belfort, who founded one of the first and largest chop shop brokerage firms in 1987, was banned from the securities business for life by 1994, and later went to jail for fraud and money-laundering, delivers a memoir that reads like fiction. It covers his decade of success with straightforward accounts of how he worked with managers of obscure companies to acquire large amounts of stock with minimal public disclosure, then pumped up the price and sold it, so he and the insiders made large profits while public investors usually lost. Profits were laundered through purchase of legitimate businesses and cash deposits in Swiss banks. There is only brief mention of Belfort’s life before Wall Street or events since 1997. The book’s main topic is the vast amount of sex, drugs and risky physical behavior Belfort managed to survive. As might be expected in the autobiography of a veteran con man with movie rights already sold, it’s hard to know how much to believe.

Obama Hare – Palin Tortoise – We All Know Who Won

By Ginger - February 4, 2011 - 07:00 UTC - 23 Comments

Picture from freakingnews.com

“The more I watch Obama, the more I realize that he is so stupid that he could lose all 50 states to President Palin next year. He’s the hare, she’s the tortoise.” – Don Surber

From Don Surber at the Daily Mail UK

Obama hare, Palin tortoise

February 3, 2011 by Don Surber

From James Taranto of the Wall Street Journal: “How Sarah Palin helped defeat ObamaCare’s deceptive advertising.”

His argument is that U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson’s smiting of Obamacare was made easier because the law is so unpopular.

From James Taranto: “Americans never bought the bill of goods that Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and their supporters in the formerly mainstream media tried to sell. A good deal of the credit goes to Sarah Palin, for coining the phrase ‘death panel’ in an August 2009 Facebook post.”

Well, I am not sure if coining is the correct verb. Linking is more like it.

Revisiting the actual quote shows that her statement was abused by her critics, especially Politifact. The actual quote from Sarah Palin:

The Democrats promise that a government health care system will reduce the cost of health care, but as the economist Thomas Sowell has pointed out, government health care will not reduce the cost; it will simply refuse to pay the cost. And who will suffer the most when they ration care? The sick, the elderly, and the disabled, of course. The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama’s “death panel” so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their “level of productivity in society,” whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil.

Sarah Palin learned first-hand as a governor that “government health care will not reduce the cost; it will simply refuse to pay the cost.”

Medicaid — run by the states but funded in large part by Congress — pays as little as 70 cents on the dollar for services rendered. That unpaid 30 cents is passed on to privately insured patients, who then see their premiums soar. This then gets twisted into the government making the case for government-run health care since it saves money.

The death panels idea is not far-fetched.

Britain calls its death panel NICE. It denies drugs for sick patients saying Avastin and other medications are too expensive.

Obama already is playing NICE by revoking approval of Avastin retroactively — based on price, and not on the safety or the competence of the drug.

That is a death panel, plain and simple.

At the age of 14, Hailee Steinfeld has been nominated for the 'Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role' at this year's Oscars. She stars opposite Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin in 'True Grit' - a Western about a young girl searching for her father's murderer directed by the Coen brothers - and Steinfeld more than holds her own. Her performance in the film, released in the UK on the 11th February, has earned her comparisons with a young Jodie Foster.

What the Oscar nomination means - she was also nominated for a SAG and a BAFTA - is that she is in the throes of her first 'awards season'. The red carpet has become her second home over the last month or so, and she is giving actresses twice her age a run for their money.

So far, she has worn Calvin Klein , Moschino and Marc Jacobs . At the Golden Globes she wore a dress by Prabal Gurung , the current darling of the New York fashion scene. At Sunday night's SAG Awards, she looked fresh and fashion forward in colourful Prada .

One of the problems dressing such a young star for formal events is how to keep the gowns age appropriate. Many dresses designed for the red carpet will age an actress who is just 14. Go too far in the other direction and one risks making a girl look too sexy before her time.

Gurung was not worried about dressing his charge for the Globes. "Hailee's ability to carry herself with understated confidence and walk the red carpet with such grace is unique, particularly for a girl her age." he says.

"For a designer, you really don't have control over how a celebrity will look in one of your creations but with Hailee, the way she has been putting herself together is as promising as her career - strong, modest and enviable."

Next up will be the Oscars on the 27th February, and we can't wait to see how she bends current fashion trends to make them work for her age.

Hailee Steinfeld dons a quirky, white polka dot scalloped hemline dress by Marc Jacobs at the BAFTA Tea Party, Jan 2011.

At the Teen Vogue Hollywood Party last October, Hailee chose a simple, chic black shift dress and ankle boots.

Hailee wears a Calvin Klein grey shift dress matched with strappy platform heels at the 17th Annual Women in Hollywood Tribute, Oct 2010.

In a pretty, Phillip Lim layered dress, Hailee looked fresh and angelic at the BAFTA Awards, Nov 2010.

At the Golden Globes Party Hailee opted for a Stella McCartney LBD with a twist, Dec 2010.

Getting in touch with her feminine side, Hailee wears a Moschino metallic dress with a lilac waistband at the 'True Grit' premiere, Dec 2010.

Hailee pares down her look at FOX 11's 'Good Day LA', Jan 2011, with this striped T-shirt dress, opaque leggings and black flats.

Hailee dons a purple, gathered Moschino dress with teal shoes at the premiere of 'American Masters', Jan 2011.

Going back to black, Hailee wears a black Jenny Peckham dress with an embroidered collar at The National Board of Review of Motion Pictures Awards Gala, Jan 2011.

At The CBS 'Early Show', Hailee opts for a splash of springs hottest colour, 'honeysuckle', with contrasting black trimming and sleeves.

It was nude dresses galore at the Critics Choice Movie Awards and Hailee Steinfeld was on the style wagon in this Marchesa light pink one-shouldered chiffon dress.

In the dog days of summer 2009, a chill is descending on America. This alarming climatic phenomenon was last seen in the 1950s when a young senator waged war on the Soviet threat within the United States. Joe McCarthy, an idealistic politician, who for what may have been for all the right reasons, used methods to fight this "Red Enemy" that kindled so much fear in our land that neighbor spied on neighbor and our government kept files on its citizens for "un-American activities".

Over sixty years later, hysteria yet again permeates our country. The guardians of our government have turned from protecting it citizens to engaging in McCarthy like tactics to diminish, discredit or delete opposition. What an irony that a country that has achieved greatness primarily because of its vigorous adversarial process, now responds to critics by suppressing guaranteed right. Wars have been halted, minorities have been given Civil Rights and a monarchy was ousted because of the citizens' vigorous questioning and opposition of their government.

The McCarthy mantra of "un-American activities" has yet again been evoked to impugn the motives of Americans that are engaging law makers, demanding answers to concerns about the proposed Health Care legislation. Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi and her entourage, aided by liberal media outlets, have wrapped this revolutionary bill in the cloak of humanitarianism. Rude perhaps and sometime unruly town hall participants and protesters shout out in anger against the bill citing their genuine concern that an America will embrace an inferior British style health care system but having the greater fear that the legislation will plunge America into socialism.

But could it be that slurs and demonization tactics are a blinking sign - dangerous road ahead? Is America heeding a warning that the administration has begun to organize all the power of the United States government capable of suppressing dissent if it so chooses?

Two recent events have caused a stir in civil libertarians that seem to have been lost as the country's attention has been riveted on town hall meetings and the health care reform. It received coverage, almost as an aside with no major outcry.

In late July, the Federal Register published notice that the White House may lift its policy barring Federal Web sites from tracking users' online habits. In 2000, under the Clinton administration, it was opined that a ban on Federal Government's use of persistent cookies would protect citizen's privacy and prevent a potential chilling effect on citizens' online visitation of the government's various Web sites. Persistent cookies are used by the private sector to obtain information of a visitor at a web site to assist in the selling of advertisements and tracking potential buyers. One must ask the obvious, "For what purpose would the Federal Government be interested in an American's internet visitation?"

At the same time that the government was announcing the consideration of tracking the surfing habits of Americans, another bothersome invasion into American's cyber privacy was begun. On the White House website, the following was posted, "There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to end of life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain emails or through casual conversation. Since we can't keep track of all of them here at the White House, we're asking for your help. If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov."

The" McCarthy-esque" solicitation for American's to spy on Americans was bold and unapologetic. Note the request was to forward the e-mail. If the White House had requested just the content of the governmentally defined "fishy" concerns, this would have been concerning in and of itself. One must look to overreaching guidance from the White House to citizens; forward e-mails. If the government were intent on suppressing opposition, consider what intelligence this endeavor collects: 1) The email addresses of the Americans that dissent. 2) Identifying information contained within email and signatures. 3) Email address of others who were sent or who forwarded the email. This would be gold mine for an intelligence collection mission.

Is it possible that conversations made in discourse of a current affair will place an American on an enemy list? The 1978 Presidential Records Act mandates the preservation of these emails so the information must be collected and maintained.

As reported at Fox News a recent clash between a Fox News Reporter and White House Press Secretary Robert Gibb revealed that hundreds of Americans had received unrequested e-mails from the White House reference the health care bill. The recipients demanded to know how the White House got their email address. Could the "Report your Neighbor" program have generated a list that resulted in the unsolicited email?

In view of what to some may be evidence that the current administration is attempting to diminish or discredit opposition to the government and its proposed changes and overt acts to identify those who utilize freedom of speech in opposition to their government, the question that must be entertained, "Is the government posturing to act in a manner to delete and remove those who lawfully question?"

July 2, 2008 in Colorado Springs, candidate Barack Obama warned us, "We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

Three days after the new administration took office, DOD 1401.10 Civilian Expeditionary Workforce (CEW) Directive was re-written replacing a Presidential Directive that had been unchanged since the first Bush administration in 1992. Comparison of the two is striking in the broadening of the power given the CEW in the new directive. CEW Directive 1992 ensures that the power of the CEW is limited to an overseas theater of operation with the term "overseas" appearing at least 33 times. Reviewing the 2009 version you will not find "overseas" mentioned at all.

The comparison is of changes to the directive is a concern. The 1992 design is clearly designed to free up military personnel in areas where contract CEW perform tasks to include engineers, logistics specialists, weapons inspectors, administrative specialists and on provincial reconstruction teams. The 2009 CEW, however, states; "Civilian Expeditionary Workforce shall be organized, trained, cleared, equipped, and ready to deploy in support of combat operations by the military; contingencies; emergency operations; humanitarian missions; disaster relief; restoration of order; drug interdiction; and stability operations.... Again plaguing questions arise.

Five days after the CEW was enacted, on January 26, 2009, H.R.675 was introduced into Congress by Representative Bob Filner, a California Democrat. This bill would amend title 10, United States Code, to provide police officers, criminal investigators, and game law enforcement officers of the Department of Defense with authority to execute warrants, make arrests, and carry firearms. This bill treats the DOD personnel as civilian employees to prevent conflict with Posse Comitatus. On 3/16/2009 the bill was referred to House subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security.

Is there a possibility that the seemingly innocuous "changes" in our military powers portends something a bit more sinister? There is a veritable alphabet soup already of domestic Federal Law Enforcement including but not limited to the FBI, DEA, ATF even IRS and EPA. The delineated jurisdictions have been painstakingly defined by past administrations to avoid any possibility of a national police force.

An administration and a congress in lockstep to assure that their agenda must be enacted for the "good of the people" may have a real potential of addressing their non complying citizens as a road block to progress. What extraordinary powers may be used to assure adoption of "change".

The vitriolic and disrespectful attack on the demonstrators by sponsors and proponents of this bill establishes that the will of the people is of no consequence. The invasion of the administration into private emails and cyber communications show a total ignorance or arrogant disregard of the right to privacy. The rewriting of Presidential Directive 1410.10 and the side stepping of the Posse Comitatus by the introduction of H.R. 675 make a federal police force a possibility. The means to support a motive.

The pattern of facts may be a purely innocent attempt to provide a change to protect the citizens from an administration that is not knowledgeable of constitutional restrictions, in a new administration headed by a constitutional law professor. Yet it again, the patterns of facts may reveal a Machiavellian effort to not only change Washington, but to change the Constitution of the United States. CommentsClose CommentsPermalink

Making Money Uk

I love her style!!

..........and bullshit walks! Easy as that for start-ups when it comes to making up your mind about raising additional capital. Are we in a bubble? No idea but this question keeps creeping up. Those of us who went through the bubble at the turn of the century are secretly hoping we're not in another one. Those who don't remember the last one are also worried wondering whether all the old-timers are right. One way or another, it doesn't really matter.

You'll hear multiple opinions on whether to raise money at times like this. I have a very clear opinion on this. It's based on the fact that I believe the best venture backed businesses are in it for the long haul. These are companies with a real product that add value to their customers. These are businesses generating real cashflow intent on growing to significant scale. Finally, these are businesses which will use additional money to expand. Hence, here's my take on when to take money (with focus on EU based businesses):

1. Sequoia or Kleiner are on the phone. Start negotiating, get the best deal you can get and make sure to raise the money. Say what you will but Tier 1 VC's from the US will lead to a far larger exit. Specifically the top tier funds have access to management for your businesses, access to potential partners and are likely to sit on the boards of the companies that could buy you. You'd be dumb not to take money but do so wisely.

2. A tier 1 fund from Europe is interested. Find out whether there's a good fit with your businesses. I've often enough written about how to figure this out and I say to focus on the partner and not the fund when doing your due diligence. Negotiate a good deal and take the money. Tier 1 funds in Europe have learned to add value, have significantly better networks nowadays and will most likely get you bought by a US based business.

2.5. A tier 1 fund from your home country calls up. I've labeled this 2.5 because Tier 1 funds in Europe tend to only differentiate themselves based on where they are located. The rest is mostly the same. The benefit of a tier 1 locally invested in your business is the proximity. It's in your interest. You want them closer than further. If the terms are right and you have offers from abroad and locally, I'd sway towards local but the vibe has to be right. You won't be necessarily doing anything wrong taking money from a London VC verses a German VC when you are in Germany. The London VC may even be around more than the German VC. This all depends on the partner.

3. A tier 2 fund from the US calls up. Ask yourself first why they found you? Go ahead and ask. Further, research the fund and find out what they've done in the past. Have they invested in Europe before? Are they only looking to Europe because their dealflow in the US sucks? Think twice about whether they will invest the necessary time to be in Europe and invested in your business. If the deal terms are good and you are comfortable with the partner doing the deal, take the money. They can still be helpful in accessing US buyers. They are highly unlikely to open as many doors as Kleiner or Sequoia but they definitely know more people in the US than many European partners. Plus make sure you want to go to the US. They will probably eventually ask you to move the company there.

4.  A tier 2 fund from outside your home region in the EU finds you. Ask yourself how the hell they found you. More importantly, if you found them, ask yourself why the Tier 1 funds from your local region aren't interested in what you are doing. Say what you will but a UK based fund prefers to invest first in the UK and then rest of Europe. A German fund in Germany and then rest of Europe, etc. Although valuations are good and the power is in your hands to some extent think twice. There are times when taking money could be detrimental to the health of your business (as well as to your equity stake). It's nice to get a higher valuation and some extra cash but make sure it doesn't ultimately cost you more than you think.

5. A tier 2 fund from your local region calls up. Again, ask yourself first why the tier 1 funds aren't interested. Don't underestimate the value of many tier 2 funds though. Maybe they aren't the best known name in the market. At the same time, maybe they are striving to become a better fund. Maybe the number two in the market will work harder than the number one for you. This may be in your interest. Maybe! Do your homework and if you are comfortable with terms, take the money. Be far more diligent in this case though. Think longer and harder about whether you really can do more with the money now or prefer to hold out a bit.

6. Some tier 3 fund you've never heard of and can't find out much about approaches you. Be really careful. There are lots of people in this business who sure won't be around in a couple years. Money from these guys can be a nightmare. At the same time, maybe your business is the nightmare and you couldn't raise money at any other time. One way or another, things aren't going right one way or another. If you need the money to survive and know you'll never get more down the road, do everything you can to raise cash now. Maybe you've just been approached by the future Kleiner or Sequoia of Europe. Maybe not.....but money talks and bullshit walks!

You'll notice a general trend from 1. through 6. above. Take the money! If you can get good terms, know how to put the money you raise to work for growth and like the partner from the funds approaching you, go for it. The getting is good right now. As a VC I'm worried about valuations and bursting bubbles, etc. but as an entrepreneur you should be optimizing for you business. Money is always good. Ignore all the crap about having too much money and being negatively swayed by this. In this post I am defaulting to the fact that I think you are a smart entrepreneur. You aren't going to raise money to get that Porsche as a company car. You're going to grow your business and become amazing. Some will say I am wrong but I'd prefer to have the cash in the bank and worry about being wrong later.

Once in a while an otherwise rational and intelligent person will come to me with a get rich quick scheme. They will have earnest and urgent reasons why it must work. They will state that they have to act now or the opportunity will be lost (Reminds me of those congressmen who don't read legislation but insist we must act on it now or the republic will falter!)

Some old clichés are old clichés because they are true.
